Hydra

The World’s First Hardware-Stitched Camera System

Our spherical optical systems support immersive, realistic VR and AR training used in JTAC preparation, mission rehearsal, and pilot programs. By removing the need for post production stitching, our optics reduce simulator fatigue and increase visual fidelity for faster, more effective learning.
By enabling synchronized multi perspective capture and real time rendering, Circle Optics strengthens Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) training environments and accelerates decision cycle realism in warfighter preparation.
Capturing content for immersive entertainment traditionally requires costly post production stitching. Our spherical systems eliminate this step. In an instant, content is ready for the big screen, VR headsets, and dome theater projection at up to 8K resolution and 12 bit color.
Our systems support real time broadcast pipelines, volumetric capture, and multi camera synchronization—meeting the demands of location based entertainment, XR development, and next generation media production.

3D Mapping

Circle Optics Hydra is the first system to deliver seamless colorized 360° point clouds. Traditional LiDAR provides full-depth coverage, but cameras add narrow, glitch-prone views. Hydra solves this with true spherical imaging — every pixel has a unique pointing vector, perfectly aligning with LiDAR data.

Pre-packaged with the Velodyne VLP16, Hydra weighs just 13 lbs, making it ideal for UAVs and UGVs. The system rapidly reconstructs environments with both geometry and color, enabling:

  • Safe navigation in GPS-denied environments
  • Mission rehearsal with accurate 3D models
  • Reconnaissance and terrain mapping at scale
Hydra redefines 3D mapping for defense and industry — delivering fused RGB-LiDAR data you can trust in the field.

Solving the Colorized Point Cloud Gap
Today, no system exists that can truly deliver fused, colorized RGB-D point clouds. Traditional LiDAR sensors provide accurate 360° depth data, but cameras — with their inherently narrow fields of view — introduce critical blind spots. When multiple cameras are stitched together and paired with LiDAR, the perspective mismatches between cameras create errors that distort the fused data.
Circle Optics Hydra eliminates this problem. Hydra captures imagery that is truly spherical — every pixel has a unique pointing direction in 3D vector space. When integrated with LiDAR, the datasets merge seamlessly, producing a colorized 360° point cloud with unmatched fidelity.

Meet Hydra!
Every breakthrough begins with a simple question. For Circle Optics, that question was: What if panoramic imaging didn’t have to rely on software stitching?
Traditionally, to capture a full 360° field of view, camera systems have depended on software to digitally “stitch” multiple images together. The result was often riddled with distortions, parallax errors, and time-consuming processing. This limited how panoramic imaging could be applied—especially in critical fields like defense, aerospace, and autonomous systems where speed, precision, and accuracy matter.
The Hydra project started as a bold experiment to turn this problem on its head. Instead of forcing software to reconcile separate images after the fact, Circle Optics’ founders envisioned a hardware solution—one where the lenses themselves aligned perfectly so that multiple fields of view could be combined natively, without any parallax.
It was a radical idea. Optical engineers told us it couldn’t be done at scale; the math was daunting, the tolerances microscopic. But with relentless persistence, Hydra was born: the world’s first stitch-free, panoramic imaging system engineered directly in hardware.
Hydra proved that it was possible to design a lens architecture where every pixel of every view lined up seamlessly. No warping. No ghosting. No lost time in post-processing. Just real-time, high-integrity situational awareness.
More than just a camera, Hydra marked the beginning of a new era for imaging. What started as a prototype has become the foundation for a platform capable of reshaping how humans and machines see the world—from securing perimeters and navigating skies to training in immersive environments.
